Spray Mix Adjuvants for Spray Drift Mitigation
نویسنده
چکیده
Numerous drift reduction adjuvants and spray deposition aids are available to applicators of crop production and protection chemicals. Performance of many of the newly introduced drift control adjuvants has not been well documented for aerial application. Since there are no product labeling or efficacy regulations for these adjuvants, applicators must rely on experience or information in the technical literature for evaluating their performance. Twelve new drift control adjuvants were selected for atomization studies in a wind tunnel to document their performance as applicable to aerial application. Spray droplet size is the primary factor that applicators can control to influence spray drift. Atomization performance of spray adjuvants in a wind tunnel is closely related to their performance under field conditions. The adjuvants were mixed in a blank emulsifiable concentrate tank mix at their maximum recommended label rate for aerial application. Atomization data were collected with a laser spectrometer on the first and eighth passes through a gear pump. The eighth pass simulates any effect of shear breakdown and loss of effectiveness of the adjuvant from bypass and recirculation in the spray tank during application. Most of the adjuvants move the droplet spectra classification from fine to medium. The most effective adjuvant moved the droplet spectra classification from fine to coarse. This performance information will aid aerial applicators in selecting drift reduction agents to meet the drift mitigation criterion for a given application.

Influence of nozzle type, nozzle arrangement and side wind speed on spray drift as measured in a wind tunnel
Spray drift is a great concern because of environmental consequences of agricultural practices. Many studies were conducted in wind tunnel (Miller, 2011; Nuyttens, 2007; Herbst, 2003) mainly focusing on the definition of quantitative deposition on collectors at different distances or heights according to (ISO 22856, 2008). In most cases, only one nozzle positioned frontally (wind direction perp...

Runoff and spray drift are important sources of nonpoint pesticide pollution in surface waters, but few studies have directly compared these routes of input in an exposure assessment scenario. To this end, a runoff formula suggested by the Organization for Economic and Cooperative Development (Paris, France) and basic drift values (95th percentiles) were integrated into a geographical informati...

This study was designed to determine if the present USDAARS spray-nozzle models, which were based on spray solutions of water plus non-ionic surfactant, could be used to estimate spray droplet-size data for different spray formulations through use of experimentally determined correction factors. Twelve spray-solution treatments were evaluated, ten of which contained a formulated glyphosate prod...

An adjuvant is any material added to a herbicide spray solution to enhance or modify the performance of the solution. Adjuvants can be divided into two general categories: spray modifiers and activators (Kirkwood, 1994). Spray modifiers are those adjuvants that change the wetting, spreading or sticking characteristics of the spray solution. This is primarily accomplished by a modification in th...

Definition of Drift When liquids are forced under pressure through small orifices (like sprayer nozzles) they are sheared into small aerosols or particles having nearly a thousand fold range in spherical diameters. Owing to gravitational forces and the viscosity of air, the rate of fall to ground can be predicted by Stokes Law and is proportional to the radius of the particles. The rate of fall...
